At the VAFA, we’re proud to recognize the incredible efforts of coaches who give their all to support their clubs and live out the values of our community. Every month, we hear powerful stories of leadership, dedication and impact, and August brought forward some truly inspiring nominations.
Congratulations to Sam Grose from Old Brighton FC who has been named the Carruthers Executive Community Coach of the Month!
Sam Grose was nominated by committee member Alex Karanicolas for their outstanding embodiment of the VAFA value of Community. Sam has been a part of the club for over eight years in various capacities and has spent the past two years coaching. Their impact goes far beyond on-field results where they have played a key role in fostering a safe and welcoming environment for everyone who joins the club. Sam is the kind of leader who creates a space where players, volunteers, and the wider community look forward to being involved each week.
Alex’s Nomination:
“Sam Grose epitomises everything a community football coach should be. Passionate, inclusive, and endlessly resilient, he has brought unwavering belief to a group that has endured extraordinary adversity this season. Despite being placed two divisions higher than expected, being regraded and starting our new division on zero points with a poor percentage after four losses, Sam never once complained. Instead, he rallied the group and inspired a remarkable turnaround leading us to seven wins from our next eight games, a run that has completely reshaped our season.
Sam’s coaching goes beyond wins and losses. In just two seasons, over 100 players have trained or played under him a testament to the welcoming, engaging environment he’s created. Whether someone has come from rugby, soccer, or has never touched a footy before, Sam finds a role for them. His approach is grounded in connection, encouragement, and growth. Every player, regardless of ability or background, feels part of something bigger under his leadership. His commitment reflects the core VAFA value of community. He fosters unity in the face of setbacks, celebrates diversity within the playing group, and makes everyone feel valued. His passion lifts spirits, his belief inspires confidence, and his inclusive nature builds lasting bonds on and off the field.
Sam Grose is more than a coach he’s the heart of our club, and the reason we continue to grow stronger together. He is truly deserving of VAFA Coach of the Month award.”
We sincerely commend Sam for their enduring commitment to their club and to the broader VAFA community.
The 2025 Monthly Recognition Awards have now come to an end, with August marking the final award of the season.
