The Division 1 Women’s season reached its midway point in Round 8, with La Trobe University securing its first win of the year, Ormond climbing into second position and ladder leader Marcellin continuing to set the benchmark for the competition.
With finals approaching, every result is becoming increasingly significant. Marcellin continued to set the pace at the top of the ladder, while Ormond strengthened its position as a genuine premiership contender.
Monash Blues also banked a valuable four points after a late comeback, while La Trobe University celebrated a breakthrough result that could provide confidence for the remainder of the season.
La Trobe University breaks through for first win
After several weeks of perseverance, La Trobe University finally broke through for its first victory of the season with a strong performance against Old Carey.
The Trobers controlled the contest from the outset, producing their best football of the year in the opening half. Their defensive pressure was a standout feature, preventing Old Carey from troubling the scoreboard before half-time while building a 19-point lead of their own.
That advantage proved more than enough as La Trobe maintained its composure throughout the second half to secure a memorable victory and move off the bottom of the ladder.
Kate Bond was a constant threat inside 50 and finished with two goals, while Phoebe Radford also found the scoreboard.
Stephanie Castagnini continued her strong season and was named among the side’s best players alongside Bond, Jessica Lowry, Claire Wilson, Teresa D’Angelo and Isobel Warrilow.
Although the result did not go their way, Old Carey continued to compete strongly throughout the contest. Zara Purcell was among the side’s better performers, while Lia Kelvie, Isabella Caminiti, Elin Simpson, Mimi Chun and Lauren Magiatzis also worked hard across the four quarters.
The victory provides La Trobe with a significant boost heading into the second half of the season and reward for a side that has remained competitive despite a difficult start to the year.
Monash Blues survive Whitefriars challenge
Monash Blues strengthened their hold on a top four position after producing a stirring final-quarter comeback to defeat Whitefriars by six points.
Whitefriars looked poised to claim an important victory after controlling large portions of the afternoon. The home side led for much of the contest and still held the advantage midway through the final term.
However, Monash Blues showed their composure under pressure, finishing strongly when the game was on the line. Their ability to capitalise on opportunities late proved the difference in a match that could have gone either way.
Tiarna Jericho was influential inside forward 50, finishing with two goals, while Anna Purtill and Ruby Rosas also contributed majors.
Rosas was again among Monash Blues’ best players and received strong support from Caitlin Williams, Alice McGinty, Purtill, Lara Sirianni and Jericho.
Whitefriars can take plenty of positives from the performance despite the result. Sophie Smith led the way, while Caitlin Ryan, Kaitlyn Wallace, Elisha Wain, Ariane Webber and Annika Mills all made important contributions.
Ryan, Toni Robb and Jessica Moloney each kicked a goal as Whitefriars pushed one of the competition’s top sides right until the final siren.
While Monash Blues consolidated their position inside the top four, Whitefriars demonstrated they remain capable of challenging the competition’s leading teams.
Ormond climb into second
Ormond continued its impressive season with a hard-fought nine-point victory over Power House, a result that lifted the Monders into second place on the ladder.
In a low-scoring contest where every opportunity was crucial, Power House made the ideal start by kicking the opening goal of the match. From that point onwards, however, Ormond’s defensive structure took control.
The Monders restricted one of the competition’s most dangerous teams to a single goal for the afternoon, holding Power House scoreless for the final three quarters. Their ability to win territory and deny scoring opportunities proved the defining factor in the contest.
Indiana Harrison and Isabella Gietzmann each kicked a goal for Ormond, while Zoe Uwland’s first-quarter major was the only goal for Power House.
Maddi Wilson produced another strong performance and was named among the best players alongside Sarah Hedger, Isabella Di Lecce, Olivia Steinfort, Michaela Di Lecce and Kitty Smyth.
Power House received strong contributions from Caoilfhionn Culliton, Suki Long, Sarah Dolan, Alice McAlea, Uwland and Stephanie Foley, but ultimately could not find enough scoring opportunities to reclaim the lead.
The result was one of the most significant of the round, with Ormond moving above Power House into second spot and positioning itself as Marcellin’s closest challenger.
Marcellin remain team to beat
Marcellin further strengthened its grip on top spot after overcoming a determined Oakleigh outfit by 13 points.
The ladder leaders were made to earn the victory, with Oakleigh taking the early advantage and leading at quarter-time. It was one of the few occasions this season where Marcellin had been placed under genuine pressure early in a contest.
The response from the Eagles was impressive. A dominant second quarter swung momentum in their favour before another strong final term ensured they secured the four points.
Marcellin’s ability to share the scoring load was a major factor in the result, with five individual goal kickers contributing to the victory.
T Zagontinos, Laura Robertson, Jennae Wakefield, Maddy Rush and Charlotte McGilp all found the scoreboard, while McGilp was also among the side’s best players.
Billie Harvey, Robertson, Alana Pane, Tess Menzies and Hayley Harley also played important roles as Marcellin improved its record at the top of the ladder.
Oakleigh once again showed why it remains firmly in the finals conversation. Emily Heverin continued her strong form in attack with two goals, while Romy Klooger also kicked a major.
Georgie Nancarrow, Jasmine Ballestrin, Sienna Bernardo, Klooger, Heverin and Lorri Gunn were all named among Oakleigh’s best players after a competitive performance.
Although Oakleigh was unable to secure the win, the contest demonstrated the side’s ability to challenge the competition’s benchmark team.
With Marcellin remaining clear on top, Ormond moving into second and Monash Blues consolidating a finals position, Round 8 further shaped what is developing into an intriguing race towards the Division 1 Women’s finals series.
