Xavs on the march, SKOB end challenging week & tame Lions

St Kevin’s Old Boys put a challenging week behind them and recorded their first win in three games as they ran over Collegians by 36 points at Harry Trott Oval. Leading by 15 points at the last break, SKOB sealed victory by nailing five goals to two in the final term but were led by Will Coates and Ash Morris in defence. Shaun Kennedy, Lachlan Nankervis, Anthony Lynch and Gerard Gleeson each kicked two, with Gleeson’s standout performance in the second quarter a highlight of the match. Will Tardif and Julian Eimutis continued their stellar seasons as the Lions’ best, while six players shared one goal each.

Old Xaverians are well and truly on the march after they completed their fourth win in a row with a 38-point victory against De La Salle at Waverley Oval. 10 goals from the one-two punch of Brendan Goss (six) and Matt Handley (four) played a major role in the win, while John Shaw led from the front with a powerful performance against fellow star, Antony Forato. Tom Humphrey and Jake Williams were the best for De La, who now fall to three straight losses and outside the top four after leading the race two games ago. Conversely, Xavs climb from fifth to third and look the form side of the competition.

St Bernard’s registered their third win for the year as they defeated Old Carey by 48 points at Carey Sports Complex.  Michael Caven’s switch from defence to attack worked wonders as the Big V star top scored with four goals for the Snow Dogs, while Cameron Jones and Ben Smithwick kicked four each for the Panthers. Tom Sullivan returned two weeks ago and took no time to return to form as he kicked three and dominated in the fashion we’ve grown accustomed, while Josh Hedley starred in a best-on-ground display.

Seven goals to two in the last quarter helped Old Melburnians seal a stunning 16-point come-from-behind victory against University Blacks at Sportscover Arena. Trailing by 15 points at the last break, the Al Armstrong (four goals) and Matt Thomas (BOG)-led OMs were relentless as they used the wide expanses of Sportscover to outrun the Blacks. Nick De Steiger dominated the ruck dual, while Blacks’ skipper Bede Mahon was best for his side. Joel Ernest kicked four goals for the Blacks, who now fall to fourth spot on the William Buck Premier ladder.

Old Trinity’s new-found mid-season form continued as they held off the ladder-leading University Blues by five points at Uni Oval for their second win in a row. Despite being held goalless in the fourth term, the T’s – through Jack Osborn (three) and Brendan Iezzi (two) – six goals were enough as the Blues sent through just five. Harry Thompson and Jack Hunt were best afield for the second-placed T’s, while Caleb Tiller was the only multiple goal scorer for the Blues.
