VAFA Selectors have named their final 24 players to take on the Northern FL on Saturday in their AFL Victoria Metro Championships match at Carlton’s Ikon Park.
Coach Cam Roberts was excited heading into the match (watch him speak below).
“The squad we have is about balance, we want players who can play in multiple positions” said Roberts.
Eight players will make their senior debut in the side on Saturday.
Of those from the 30 who miss the side, both Cam Williams and Tyson Kruse miss due to VFL commitments with Richmond, whilst Spirit of the Big V winner and 2014 Moore Medallist, Tom Paule (Old Melburnians) withdrew after he suffered a knock to the knee in his practice match last week.
The two emergencies were Al Armstrong (Old Melburnians) and Josh Cowan (Mazenod), both players were desperately unlucky to miss the final side.
“That was one of the hardest things I have had to do in football, tell two guys they will miss the side that both deserved to be in there” Roberts said after the teams final training.
In total 12 players in the final 24 played in the Metro Champs win over the EFL last year. VAFA Captain, Matt Handley, was confident the new team would be just as strong.
“It’s been great, we have a good core of players that have played before, and also some new invigorating young guys with good leg speed, so it’s a really good mix” Handley said.
